Finally, a smooth one at Angguruk!
Left this morning on my first flight headed to Angguruk again... it's been about 3 months or more since I've been in there. Seems like I always found a way to "bounce" the landing there due to a "bounder" [hump] in the touchdown area. It's been frustrating and a little bruising to my ego to not be able to 'grease it on' at this particular strip - it's always been safe, but still I'd like it to be smoother... Resolved this morning to try to shoot an approach that would put me past the bounder and see how that works. It's 500m long and has a 6% slope that goes almost level in the middle, then a 24% slope for the last 100m before it's vertical mountain again. To make it more of a challenge, it's tucked down in a valley where the approach across the valley has to hug the opposite wall pretty closely to give one a solid 1/4 mile final (at least I think that's what it is.. I'm usually too busy to measure it). So, the mountains are obscured by clouds, fog, haze and not promising, but the valley underneath is open and I weave my way in overhead to find the bottom 1/3 of the strip in sunlight and the rest in a deep mountain shadow - yep, there's a warning about arriving too early there b/c of that shadow, so I'm ready for it. Got the plane configured early and set it up for the landing, made my calls and 'hawked' my airspeed and rate-of-descent all the way down. Past the abort point and slipped it on to a very smooth, easy landing and stopped, braking hard by mid-field. Probably my best landing there ever and it felt good - so I wonder if it was experience, or just plain luck that made that happen? Oh well, I don't guess I'll get that answered, but I did thank God for a smooth flight there and smooth, safe landing. I'd hate to find myself taking for granted the safety and blessing of flying here, so I try to remember to thank Him daily for bringing me here and for giving me the skill and for making it fun to be a "missionary pilot". Thanks to you too who faithfully pray and faithfully support me so I can be over here doing this. You're the best "team" a guy could ask for and I'm really fortunate HE called you as well to support me.
